Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
